I spent a little over 3 years in a religious cult: a group that falls under the categories of religious cult and business. I wasn’t aware of its cult status at the time; but once I did my research, I mustered up the strength to leave. 2 years later, I am driven by a desire to help others escape from their cult situations. I have put together all the signs that I have learned over time in this article. This is meant for educational purposes based off of my own experience, plus the signs I wish I knew about before getting in a cult.

1. Religious cults are often led by someone who claims to have unity with the divine, or claims to have reached a state of perfection or enlightenment. Because of the leader’s self-proclaimed “divinity,” he or she may claim exemption from expected cultural norms and ethics. In this context, any behavior can be justified or explained. If members or non-members do not understand this, that is because they are viewing from an “unknowing” or “unenlightened” perspective, according to the leader(s) or group. Examples of this can be self-proclaimed “gurus” or “the second coming of Christ.”
